Election Eve

Pennsylvania is ground zero. Like most of my friends, I have been heavily involved in the election since before the Primary. Writing will hopefully ease my anxiousness. Three of my employees who have been voluteering are stuggling to remain in their seats today. Pacing in my office is permitted.

Wherever you go, the election is the only thing people are talking about. The Phillies post season actiivites were a welcome diversion. But after the parade, most spent the weekend on GOTV efforts.

When I stopped by Region 4's office yesterday it was bustling with activity. While tired all were saying we got to get folks to the polls.

My 21 year old daughter assurred me that her peers would defintely vote. She has volunteered to work a couple of hours at the polls tomorrow, which is so cool.

It never ceases to amaze me sheer volume of the members of the GOP who become embroiled in sex scandals. Consensual sex is one thing, performing a sex act on someone who is sleeping is just whacked.

Instead of trying to deny people access to sex education, birth control, or gay marriage, they really need to clean up their house.

Eight Belles Destroyed

Hillary encouraged folks to bet on Eight Belles, the only female in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Unfortunately, the horse ran an a good race and was crippled in the end. Sadly, the horse was destroyed because of the injury. A tragic end to Eight Belles.

Does anyone else see an awful metaphor?

Frank Rich: Preacher Double Standard

Kudos to Rich. He sums up the reality minorities and women face in daily living. We have been and continue to held to a different standard than our white male counterparts. We have prove we are capable of performing a task whereby it is assumed the boys get the job done.

Hillary is running as a white guy. She points to her "experience." I'm still not sure what exactly that experience happens to be, other than being an unaccomplished bully. While I am not a supporter, I give her credit for running like the boys. The boys she is running like just happen to be Republican.

William Jefferson Davis Clinton and the Uppity Negro Syndrome

Hooray for David Zephyr. He has eloquently stated what most folks are too polite to discuss in mixed company.

Obama is what is referred to as a Uppity Negro.  Some white folks who, for whatever reason only known to themselves, resent articulate educated black folks. It as if his ability to succeed against all odds has denied them of their American dreams. 

When Obama is called Elitist, it is an obvious code for Uppity Negro. Oh the flashbacks...

I remember working my way through college as a McDonald's shift manager in rural America. My direct manager did not go to college.  Managing a fast food joint was her career choice. She grew up in a suburban community that grew as the result of white people fleeing the city. She hated me and made my life miserable. Finally, I confronted her. "What is your problem?" I challenged. "Just because you are going to college, you think you are better than me," she countered. "You are such an uppity nigger," she continued. Her bitterness was palpable.

 

I was speechless.  We were working side by side flipping freakin' cheeseburgers. Granted with different goals. This was not my endgame. I suppose she felt trapped. 

It is amazing how folks can't see beyond superficial patriotism such as cloaking oneself in a flag. How well has the flag waving President run our country? Would they vote for Obama if he wore a flag pin? Would that take away their reason? Rev. Wright is not running for POTUS. Non-issue. Should you not vote for Hillary because she stayed with her cheatin'  husband for MORE than 20 years? He let her go on her "right wing conspiracy tour" knowing he was less than faithful. I guess that falls under for "better or worse."

It is a distraction to the real issues: 

     uncompetitive education system

     living wages

     affordable health care

             honorable retirement

             our planet

How dare Obama run an efficient well organized campaign? How dare he not wait his turn? How dare he not be an angry black man? How dare he? Who does he think he is?

So these citizens will vote for Hillary or McCain. Both will continue this misguided war AND start another one. More jobs will flow overseas; gas prices will rise to $5 a gallon; health care prices will soar. Will these conditions help these people?

My beloved country is a mess. The selling of the notion that blacks will steal their dream dates back to the birth of the country. It's funny, it was those who were oppressing the poor whites spinning this tale. It continues sadly by the Clintons.

When will these citizens drop their racial fears/discomforts and reach across the aisle to the people of color who have similar economic interests?

For the first time in my life, I am embracing and enjoying my now. Although in my recent past I have talked of living in the moment, I am finally trying to do it. 

I have not only returned to Yoga but I am enrolled in the Teacher training program. I enrolled more to work on me than with the goal of teaching a class. It is teaching me to pay attention to everything. To what people say, my words, attitudes, what I consume, how I spend my time and with whom.

The 2004 election & Shrub changed my life. The love of my country, forced me off the sidelines. I had to get involved. I became a progressive activist. I went through DFA training; became a local Committee person; served as a Treasurer for a Township Supervisor candidates; a wrote checks for the candidates I supported. Finally, I took on leadership role in a progressive think tank. How do I have time to work? I love it.

Along the way I have encountered some intriguing folks. Enter stage left, a candidate for the 2008 election. The party and office are irrelevant to this story. 

I usually attend political events with my dear friend. On this evening, I attended this event solo. I arrived fifteen minutes after the start time and the place was packed. It was the final main local event before the 2007 election. As soon I walked in, our eyes met. We both smiled. It was a weird instant chemistry. The crap really bad Lifetime movies are made of but it was stunning. Have I met this man before? Who is this handsome man? I have met so many people at the events, I struggled to remember. 

I chatted with several of my neighbors, fellow hell raisers and the candidates. When the host gathered us in the living room for the speakers, there was a seat on the couch next to him. He saw me leaning against the wall and offered me seat. At first I begged off, but when I saw that all the candidates would speak, I accepted the invitation. OK, I accepted because he was a hottie and I was wearing heels. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I thanked him and we introduced ourselves. He handed me a few of his palm cards. "You seem to know people, you can help me with my campaign." He confessed to watching me with intrigue throughout the evening. I was grateful for the seat because ALL of candidates spoke, along with a few party regulars.  It was amusing, because he seemed to move closer as the evening continued.

As our conversation continued after the speakers, several people came up to kiss his ring. He was a political player. If I got involved in his campaign, it would be my first state election. We switched cards and promised  to stay in touch.

I guess a week or so passed before I heard from him. We exchanged e-mails and he invited me to a local fundraiser as his guest. The governor was slated to appear, not a bad place to be.

He said, he would be late but informed his chief of staff to seek me out until he arrived. He showed up as the event was breaking up. He worked the room like a pro. Hugs, kisses and handshakes. When he completed his mission, we went to a local pub to have a snack.

We talked for hours. He is a self-made millionaire, smart funny, on the sane side of politics.

He will serve his constituents well. It would just lovely, if not for.....drum roll, please.... the wife and kids. It is the usual crap, no sex or intimacy at home. He doesn't want to leave for financial or political reasons.  So predictable, so not my drama.

I left the pub thinking that I would support his campaign but that would that....

Surprisingly, he called, wrote and even showed up on my doorstep. I give him credit for persistence. He thought it through. He was not concerned about a possible scandal. To his surprise, I did not want to get involved in his fantasy driven melodrama. "If you get bored, you can always walk away with no hard feelings" he suggested. I wonder if he actually listened to words flowing from his mouth. It never occurred to him that I didn't want a scandal. My now, was meaningless to him. Helloooo, there is a person here. He was setting up a scandal before he was elected. Dumbass

Any time you get naked with another human, a piece of your soul is left between the sheets. 

I recommended that he find his way back to his wife. Maybe there is a reason, she doesn't want to sleep with him. 

Or, find someone else to cast in his Lifetime fantasy. 

In these manufactured relationships, the woman playing the supporting role is usually the roadkill left under the tires of the late model BMW. I am so not interested.

Is Rep. Lamborn the one who is lying?

"We felt very threatened and intimidated, and quite frankly, scared," Anna Bartha said. "It was just not anything we would ever anticipate an elected official would pursue or a way that an elected official would conduct himself."

When asked whether his messages were threatening, Lamborn said: "No, that is ridiculous. My hope, I failed, but I had hoped to meet with them privately and confidentially because lying is a serious matter. "

When asked what he meant when he said there would be "consequences," Lamborn said: "When someone tells a lie, it just has bad consequences."

Three days after leaving the messages on the Barthas' voice mail, Lam born wrote an open letter to Greg Garcia, chair of the El Paso County Republicans, asking him to investigate.

"In an open letter to the party on Aug. 8, Garcia said the local party would not tolerate false or misleading statements in campaigns.

"That's a lot of what I'm thinking of when I talk about 'there are consequences,' because Greg Garcia had said earlier that there is going to be a punishment if people tell lies in the course of a campaign," Lamborn said.

As a private citizen, Bartha has the right to question an elected official's actions.

Federal records show that Lamborn received a $1,000 check Jan. 30, 2007, from the IGT PAC. Records also show receipt of $500 from Murphy last summer.

Lamborn said he has returned both contributions, but he could not say when that was done.

Nancy Brown, a spokeswoman for Jones Vargas, a law firm in Reno, Nev., that represents IGT, said the company's PAC sent a $1,000 contribution to Lamborn in January. She said Lamborn returned the check, although she could not provide the date of the return.

Federal records do not show that the check was returned."

So just who is lying?

Rep. Doug Lamborn did not like a letter to the editor written by a politically connected couple. Instead of writing a response, he felt compelled to leave threatening messages on their answering machine.

Are you kidding me?

My other question is why do assholes wrap their arguments in Scripture?

Lamborn is too stupid to remain on the public payroll.

I 'll respect you in the morning

Krugman continues to be the rare sane media voice in what has been a huge snow job. The Bush adminstration would not have ventured into Iraq and Iran is next without the help of the mainstream media.

The Petraeus report will have as much value as Powell serving as a marketing rep before the UN. Independent voices? Bullshit.
Both are loyal soldiers. They just follow orders.

The sad reality is more civilians will be killed for no particular reason other than we have a maniac in the White House and spineless jerks in the Congress.

Craig forced out

Believe it or not, there is a smart part of me that feels sorry for the now former Senator Craig. His found out quickly how many friends he did not possess.

Not surprising, the Repugs have determined homosexuality to be a far more egregious than prostitutes and bribes. Go figure.

The only person who seemed to be surprised by the speed of his departure was Craig.

It will be interesting to see what Craig does in the final stages of his life. Now that he managed to strip one layer of his facade, maybe he will be able to embrace who is really is and find peace.

Labor Day is Important

“I just don’t think that as a country we’ve conceptualized that this is not our father’s or our grandfather’s economy,” Mr. Stern said in an interview. “We’re going through profound change and we have no plan.”

The feeling that seems to override all others for workers is anxiety. American families, already saddled with enormous debt, are trying to make it in an environment in which employment is becoming increasingly contingent and subject to worldwide competition. Health insurance, unaffordable for millions, is a huge problem. And guaranteed pensions are going the way of typewriter ribbons and carbon paper.

“We’re ending defined benefit pensions in front of our eyes,” said Mr. Stern. “I’d say today’s retirement plan for young workers is: ‘I’m going to work until I die.’ ”

Unless you inherit a nice trust fund, my daughter's soon to be obtained college degree will only increase her debt. We as a national are in a bad place.

When this is articulated by the liberal community, the Repugs scream that we are pessimistic. If you go to work everyday and do not fear for your job or benefits, this is not a issue.

Our true concerns should be the shaky economy not the portrait Guiliani and Bush continue to paint. One week of money currently being dumped into Iraq could be spent on affordable education and a sane health care delivery system.

We all should pay attention to Labor Day.

Ye protest too much

Another day, another self-righteous Republican apologizing for bad behavior. If he is gay, who cares? If he is doing dumb shit in the men's room, well that is another story. Should we have another bathroom for kids so they are not exposed to Republican politicians?

I learned far too much about "tapping"codes signaling the need to be serviced.

What never ceases to amaze me is the willingness of these wives to drug out to a press conference to stand by their man. Are they so caught up in the lifestyle that comes with being married to a politician, they will do whatever it takes to keep it? Politics is clearly their drug of choice.

For the dumbass to hold a press conference just dumped gas on the story. How long will be before all of his boyfriends surface?

Get over yourself, end the hell for your family and resign.
